Amazon Kindle Paperwhite 2015 Pros and Cons:

Amazon Kindle Paperwhite 2015 Pros:

Here are some of the benefits and advantages of the Amazon Kindle Paperwhite:

  • Build quality is solid (albeit with plastic).
  • Screen is bright. Text and images are sharp.
  • It has the same high-resolution e-ink display found on the more expensive Kindle Voyager.
  • It has a better screen, more ram, and better performance over the previous version while costing the same amount of money.
  • It has a new typesetting engine with improved kerning and justification.
  • Battery life is great. It will last for weeks. This makes the Paperwhite an idea companion for long travel days or for long excursions without access to power.
  • We received a unit that was already charged and connected to our Amazon account. Thus, we were able to start reading books right away.
  • Interface is easy to use and has a very small learning curve. Most people will be able to pick up the Kindle Paperwhite and immediately begin using it.
  • All Kindles have access to the best e-book ecosystem currently available. Finding and purchasing books is a breeze. Locating books on the device is also easy and intuitive.
  • Free 3G wireless service is available with the more $189 version of the Kindle Paperwhite.
  • The optional Kindle Unlimited service gives you the ability to borrow thousands of books for only $9.99 a month.
  • FreeTime functionality allows you to set up profiles on your Kindle for children. It allows you to set reading goals, track progress, and encourages kids to read.
  • Starting at only $119, the Amazon Kindle Paperwhite is a very affordable, high quality dedicated e-reader.

Amazon Kindle Paperwhite 2015 Cons:

Here are some of the disadvantages and limitations of the 2015 Amazon Kindle Paperwhite:

  • The entry price includes ads. You have to pay $20 extra to remove the ads.
  • Plastic build.
  • No audiobook support.
  • No physical buttons for turning pages.
  • No auto-brightness functionality.
  • No waterproofing.
  • No wireless charging.
  • No expansion slot.
  • Not a substantial upgrade over the 2013 Kindle Paperwhite.

Kindle Paperwhite 2015 vs Kindle Paperwhite 2013

The 2015 Amazon Kindle Paperwhite has a sharper, higher resolution display vs the 2013 Paperwhite. It has a new font called Bookerly which I find to be better than what’s on the older model. The new model also has better performance and more RAM.

The only reason to buy the old model over the new model is price. If you can find the older one for much cheaper than the new one, get it. The 2015 Paperwhite is better but not substantially better. If you can save $30 or more, you can use those savings to buy books. 🙂

Kindle Paperwhite 2015 vs Kindle Fire HD

If you want access to audio books, music, video, apps, and/or games, get a Kindle Fire HD. The Paperwhite doesn’t have any of this functionality.

However, if you plan to do a lot of reading with your device, I suggest getting the Paperwhite instead. The Kindle Fire HD doesn’t have as nice a screen as the Paperwhite for reading. The Paperwhite will be much easier on your eyes compared to the Kindle Fire HD.  Battery life is also a major difference. The Paperwhite will get weeks of battery life compared to only eight hours or less for the Kindle Fire HD.

If you can’t decide on which to choose, consider getting both. I personally own the Kindle Paperwhite and a Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 (2014).

Kindle Paperwhite 2015 vs Kindle Voyager

The Kindle Voyager gives you a higher contrast screen, pressure sensitive buttons for turning pages, and auto-brightness control. These are features the Paperwhite do not have. Are these features worth an extra $80? Not in my opinion. I would only buy the Voyager as a gift for an avid reader or author. Otherwise, I would used that $80 for books or put it towards a Kindle Fire HD to accompany my Paperwhite.

Should You Upgrade to the 2015 Kindle Paperwhite?

If you have the 2013 Kindle Paperwhite, I don’t believe the incremental changes in the 2015 model are worth the upgrade. I believe you are better off waiting until a more substantial upgrade is released.

If you have an older Kindle, especially one that doesn’t have back-lighting, the new Paperwhite may be a nice upgrade. The new model will have a much better screen and improved performance.

Another thing to consider- the next version of the Kindle Fire HD or HDX might be released ahead of the holidays. Perhaps you’ll want to save your pennies for a new Kindle gadget later this year rather than getting a incremental upgrade today.

Buyers Recommendation

If you are in the market for a dedicated e-reader, the Amazon Kindle Paperwhite is the only device to buy. It’s inexpensive, has a great screen, and has access to the best e-book ecosystem currently available.

If you want a device for more than reading books, I suggest any of the Kindle Fire HDX devices (I own the Kindle Fire HDX 8.9). You’ll give up the battery life and great screen of the Paperwhite but you’ll gain the ability to play music, video, audio books, and games.

Regardless of which Kindle you purchase, you are going to get one of the best e-readers available.  You really can’t go wrong with any of them.
